A Dozen Ways to Live the Life You’ve Always Wanted
Are you a business owner who yearns to break free from being an ‘activity junkie’ and live the life you’ve always wanted – but who is struggling to achieve this goal?
It’s vital that you as a business owners stop yourself being pulled in different directions and achieve a work life balance which will boost your productivity and bottom line and free you up to spend quality time with family and friends.
1. Book Next Year’s Holidays and Breaks Now
This demonstrates commitment to family and friends and gives you things to look forward to.
2. Do the 3 Big Things
Set yourself three key tasks to achieve every day and complete them. This avoids you going home feeling you have under achieved.
3. Make Your First Hour at Work Count
Avoid frittering it away and being distracted by emails – just crack on with the 3 big tasks.
4. Book Afternoons Off
Aim to get out of the business / building one afternoon a month and give yourself thinking time to work ‘on’ the business and keep your focus on the bigger picture. You’ll return with fresh ideas to help power your company forward in these challenging times.
5. Sign-Up a Partner in Crime
On the first Thursday of every month I get on my bike and enjoy a 30 mile ride with members of Rotary International. This enjoyable activity means I avoid booking meetings on that day and always return from the trips relaxed and energised.
6. Skip Those Internal Meetings
You are paying your senior management team to manage and organise these sessions so use your time more effectively. Instead conduct a weekly 1-2-1 with each of your senior managers lasting one hour. These sessions will be more productive to drive the business forward.
7. Savour Small Adventures
Get out and broaden your horizons – both on the work and personal front. Meet new people and do different things which stimulate and energise you. Not every adventure needs to be on the scale of the one I had in 2007 when I cycled 3,500 km in seven weeks down the west coast of North America from Vancouver, Canada to Tijuana, Mexico and came within 30 feet of a formidable grizzly bear!
8. Keep Learning
As a business leader it’s vital that you keep abreast of new trends and developments both inside and outside of your industry. Visit, forums, exhibitions and conferences and find out what the future has in store. I derived enormous benefit from attending this year’s Think Digital conference and am looking forward to the insights from top achievers at the forthcoming Be World Class Conference.
9. Support and Attend School Sports Days and Prize-Giving Days
They only happen once – and your presence is invariably treasured and appreciated.
10. Start Late, Leave Early
Get out of the trap of being the first to arrive in the office and the last to leave. This is draining you, your creativity and your ability to keep focussed on the bigger picture.
11. Switch Off at 5
Give yourself enough time at night to recharge your batteries. This includes switching off the mobile and staying away from social media platforms – however tempting they may be!
12. Start Now!
There’s no time like the present to take action and reap the rewards!
